I’ll see what I can dig out. It was certainly a university-wide tradition by 1989 — the main purpose seemed to be to indicate that you were fair game for flour and egging if you were wearing red. What I particularly remember were people who tried the “double-stem” system — slicing the stem carefully lengthwise and putting half in one colour ink and half in another (it was never the resounding success it should have been!).
